Harbir has always been involved with children and, for decades, worked on projects that support them. The kids that know her and volunteer with her decided to work on a project pertaining to one of their biggest concerns, sustainability and recycling.
WHY WE SUPPORT HARBIR K BHATIA
We support Harbir Bhatia because she is a strong candidate and great role model. She has clear views on shaping Santa Clara’s future. Some of us have known her longer and others met her this year. But we have seen that she is unique and done special things, which seems like people aren’t like that now days.
Harbir has been transparent about the city’s plans, budgets, and council activities, and worked with youth to explain the questions and brought us along in the journey.
We specifically commend her on her effort to include the youth and make sure that we understand what’s happening because it ultimately is the future we will have to live with. Along with these, a lot of her great qualities have rubbed off on us.
Some of the things we learned:
- How to convey our message with confidence through outreach.
- We also learned the importance of analysis by looking deeper and how things could affect each other.
- By working with her we learned about some critical decisions and how to think through them.
Some of the things that really concern us about the future:
- People making decisions for all the people and the longer term,
- The climate crisis,
- Where we will live and can afford to,
- Are there really qualified people in our national and local governments.
One thing that we have started to understand is how local elections are so important because they are what become the national problems.
We did a project for the campaign, a sustainable marketing flyer.
PROJECT: Sustainable Marketing Flyer For A Brighter Future, Tea Light!
Harbir Bhatia and our youth committee wanted to find a way to create door hangers without producing more waste. Her campaign slogan is “Vote Harbir for a sustainable and brighter future,” so we decided to incorporate that into our project. Our committee handmade numerous door hangers by reusing existing materials collected by the committee from our homes and friends.
We asked for materials such as paper, cardboard boxes, and soft plastic. We wanted to create a frame-like back with a handle. So it’s strong enough to attach a half sheet flyer, printed with simple printer paper which is recycled, without gloss ink or plastic coating and also strong enough to hold a tea candle. We did this instead of using heavy cardstock glossy paper, which wasn’t recyclable, and created more garbage afterwards. So in this way we could prevent the creation of new garbage, and repurpose existing materials, which all or almost all are recyclable.
Piatti’s, an Italian restaurant gave us menus and such that they were going to recycle. So we decided to leave them out for days in the sun and then sanitize them to use them for our project.
Some of the things we learned are that there is a lot we can do with existing materials to repurpose them.
Also for this project what slowed us down was trying to use cardboard for the backing because the back frame didn’t need to be so thick. Cutting cardboard was a lot harder and slower than paper. But we’re glad we got to try lots of materials.
Overall we started with the goal that we’d like to give everyone a flyer and tea light, but realized there were more steps involved once we started. Now we are starting to deliver them to residents.
This experience was also beneficial for our committee members, as we formed stronger bonds with the people we knew and created new ones with the people we hadn’t. We will always remember this time and getting involved in the city in the future. She has won as far as we are concerned.
We hope you like our project and have a light of hope for a brighter future! We hope you will vote for Harbir Bhatia for District 1.
